Call for Papers: Race & Place in the American South

The Department of History and the Summersell Center for the Study of the South at the University of Alabama are soliciting papers for the sixth biennial Race & Place in the American South Conference. The conference will be held on the University of Alabama campus, April 10-12, 2008.

Although we welcome papers that examine all aspects of southern history, we are particularly interested in those that examine issues of racial identity and place, broadly construed. We welcome proposals for panels and individual papers, and especially encourage participation from early career scholars.

The keynote address for the 2008 conference will be delivered by Raymond Arsenault, John Hope Franklin Professor of Southern History at the University of South Florida, St. Petersburg, and author of the masterful Freedom Riders: 1961 and the Struggle for Racial Justice.
